Leveling through World of Warcraft Classic or “Vanilla”, you probably encountered the Timbermaw Hold in Felwood and Winterspring, or the Argent Dawn in the Plaguelands. These factions offered rewards to players who advanced their reputations. Along with questing, reputation was earned in increments by grinding the faction’s enemies; killing them over and over, and turning in looted designated items. Rewards included some profession recipes, weapons, and armor. When players pass through the Dark Portal with World of Warcraft Classic Anniversary Burning Crusade, they will find a world devastated by the Legion and many new factions seeking assistance.
Outland factions award reputation for questing, grinding and turn-ins, but unlike the sparse rewards on Azeroth, Outland factions offer a variety of weapons, armor, recipes, pets, and new inscription glyphs. These rewards offer advancement potential for casual, non-raiding players. Though, the biggest incentive to reaching Exalted may be to purchase tabards, ground mounts, and new flying mounts at level 70.
Getting Your Feet Wet
The Horde’s Thrallmar, and the Alliance’s Honor Hold, in the initial zone, Hellfire Peninsula, offer an array of reputation gear and weapons, but the Cenarion Expedition in Zangarmarsh is the first faction players encounter with a mount reward. The flying Cenarion War Hippogryph is a worthy reward for Exalted adventures.

A Tale of Two Factions
Players arrive in Shattah City, Outland’s neutral hub city, early in the expansion. During the introductory tour, they learn about The Aldors and The Scryers. These two factions battle the Burning Legion from very different backgrounds. Players start off as neutral with both, but chose one to advance, resulting in lost standing with the other. These factions do not have mounts, but offer class-specific weapons and gear, inscriptions, and tabards. I recommend reviewing their offerings before deciding which path to follow.

Egging You On
One of more interesting factions is The Netherwing, a faction of dragons accessible at level 70 after players gain the ability to fly. Rather than killing foes, players fly around an area, searching for Netherwing Eggs to pick up and turn in. The egg search can be laborious but is worth it to purchase Netherwing Drakes in several colors.

Achievement Titles
The Burning Crusade also added new titles based on playstyle beyond PVP. For example, reaching Exalted with the Mag’har (Horde) or Kurenai (Alliance) of Nagrand, the Sporeggar of Zangarmarsh, and Timbermaw Hold of Azeroth grants the “the Diplomat” title. Battling demons to Exalted with the end-game Shattered Sun Offensive awards the “of The Shattered Sun” title, as well as one of my favorite tabards in the game for only 1000G.

Wrap Up
This is a peak of what awaits through the Dark Portal. Outland’s factions and rewards provide plentiful content and rewards after hitting level 70. World of Warcraft made significant improvements in quest design, hub distribution, and end-game content in this first expansion. Expect to fight hard for your treasure. Outland is no walk in the park. As the perpetual troublemaker, Q, warned Captain Picard in the classic Star Trek: The Next Generation episode, Q Who:
“If you can’t take a little bloody nose, maybe you ought to go back home and crawl under your bed. It’s not safe out here. It’s wondrous, with treasures to satiate desires both subtle and gross. But it’s not for the timid.”
