While we wait for Gamescom 2025 and the grand World of Warcraft Midnight expansion reveal, some interesting information came to light about the pre-ordering packages. As with recent expansions, Midnight will be available in Base, Heroic, and Epic versions, with corresponding increases in price and additional content. What stood out to me was the Epic’s Midnight Housing Bundle, which includes four Midnight-themed art Decor pieces. This is the first mention of art as a housing decorative item, beyond preview screenshots. I hope art decor’s flexibility and features will be covered at Gamescom, along with housing music.

A World of Artcraft
World of Warcraft includes a wide range of buildings; inns, homes, and halls, to name a few. More often than not, art adorns the walls of these structures. Portraits appear to represent the majority of pieces, but landscapes, cityscapes, magical representations, and still life can also be found.

Art displayed in World of Warcraft is not of the highest quality. Some portraits look downright terrible, but this is part of their charm and authenticity. Not every real-life artist was a DaVinci or Rembrandt. In comparison, most Warcraft art pieces are better than some medieval or Renaissance paintings.

The player housing art gallery can rival the furniture and items selection, in diversity if not quantity . I look forward to reviewing pieces I never found in-game and mixing and matching paintings to create just the right vibe for every room.

The Censored Woman
There is one painting I expect to be missing from the gallery. During the fallout of Blizzard’s sexist behavior scandal, they decided to scrub the game of overtly sexual material. In a move, which I characterized as tone-deaf to the actual issues, they replaced the painting of a partially undressed woman with a bowl of fruit.

I do not know where the painting was located in-game, so I do not know if it was frequently viewed. Though, I do not believe the change addressed institutional sexism in World of Warcraft, considering the low resolution and naughty bits being covered. It still feels like a panicked knee-jerk reaction.
Customization Options?
Customization is name of the game with World of Warcraft Housing, but existing art decor appear to be flat image files instead of three-dimensional pieces of furniture. Will art decor be able to be resized or their frames changed? Once again, hopefully, we learn more during Gamescom.
Bring On Warband Portraits
Let us move beyond old and portraits. Updated representations of chief NPC characters are all well and good, but what about our characters? Warbands allow four characters to chill together at a campsite. This is nice for a loading screen, but what about a portrait? I would love a painting of my beloved alts hanging over the mantlepiece, but not in the campsite individual poses. I want them huddled together, holding up ales, and mugging for the camera.
Just to get more complicated and ambitious, I want to see Warband portraits place our characters into famous paintings. Come on, situating an orc, tauren, blood elf, and troll into Rembrandt’s The Night Watch would be great, especially if it is just for the body shape and exposed skin – Keep the period dress.

The Art of Warcraft Art
I enjoy buying physical expansion boxes because of the inclusion of a concept art book. There are so many brilliant art pieces used to visualize and guide creation of the world; from simple pencil sketches to highly detailed awe-inspiring masterpieces.

Spending hours scrolling through multitudes of concept art, seeing how the game evolved and the design talent responsible, along with displaying our favorite pieces in our houses, would be amazing.
New Life for Trading Card Art
The World of Warcraft Trading Card Game represented another bounty of diverse and badass art elements, showcasing characters, spells, weapons, and combat. If even a faction of the more-than-7,000 designs were available for housing decor, it would be another windfall for customization.

What Say You?
What do you think? Is art decor a significant element of your housing plans? Do any of these suggestions make sense? What do you want from art decor for your house?
