Vendors Thrilled For World of Warcraft Classic Hardcore “Self Found”

It was during Blizzcon 2023 that “Self Found” mode was announced for World of Warcraft Classic Hardcore. Hardcore mode upped the game’s challenge by granting just one life to a character: die and it’s back to the Create New Character screen. Self Found will be a togglable option and transforms the game from an MMO into a single-player survival game: no Auction House, no trading, no quest grouping, no mail. Players will be restricted to quests, crafting, and mob loot for essential weapon and armor upgrades. The launch of Classic Hardcore revitalized the stature of Bank Alts. Self Found is equally anticipated by Azeroth‘s merchants and trainers.

The brief but exciting announcement at Blizzcon 2023

Show Me The Money

“Yes, I’m absolutely thrilled about it,” proclaimed Marda Weller, long-time Stormwind Weapons Merchant. “Quest rewards provide what they provide, right? No choice there. Without the Auction House and trading available to them, adventurers (players) are going to have to rely more on us dedicated merchants for gear and weapon upgrades, especially when they’re starting out. It certainly puts a new shine on Common quality gear, right? White gear’s better than gray. I’m looking forward to the new customers gracing my shop.”

When asked for any advice Merchant Weller offers adventurers, “Bags, right? It’s all about bag space. I recommend learning Tailoring, right? Make bags, fill with stuff, profit! And I’m not just saying that because Georgio is my father’s best friend’s second cousin.”

I located Artisan Tailor and trainer Georgio Bolero in the city’s Mage Quarter and he reinforced Merchant Marda’s suggestion. “It only makes sense. Tailoring provides more than a wonderful selection of cloth armor for our illustrious magic-users. Indeed, bags are the life’s blood of adventuring. Who wants to stop in the middle of a quest or exploring some dark corner of the map to waste a hearth cooldown to sell a few trinkets and double back?”

“Tailoring allows you to use the material you loot to increase your storage. It’s a far better option than paying ridiculous prices to purchase bags. Have you priced bags lately? It’s robbery, I say, robbery. Oh, if you see Marda again, please let her know we’ll be over at seven-thirty for pasta and game night.”

I relayed Georgio’s comments to Thurman Mullby, a General Goods Vendor who offers a selection of bags, and he gave a thoughtful response, “#$@% that guy! He thinks he’s all that! Did the wanker mention you don’t just learn Tailoring and make bags? You have to work your way up to it! Did he mention you have to pay him to learn the skill as well? What about the cost of threads and dyes? No? Didn’t mention that? How about the time spent weaving scraps into rolls, before you make anything? I’m sure that’s how a hardnosed adventurer wants to spend their time.”

“Now if you ask me, Skinning is the way to go. We merchants pay a good 3 silver for a batch of 20 light leather. Not hard to come by when you consider all the beasties roaming about outside the gates. Actually, I’m surprised they haven’t been skinned to extinction by now.”

It’s Not Easy Being Green

Merchant Marda is correct, a white Common quality weapon will do more damage than a gray Poor quality sword, albeit not by much, but green Uncommon and better quality items provide much needed stat increases. Green weapons and gear can be crafted, awarded for quest completion, and looted from mobs, but there are other means available.

Lizzarik is a goblin Weapon Dealer who traverses the road between the Horde’s Crossroads base and the neutral seaside town of Ratchet in The Barrens. He also expressed support for the new mode as well as offering Uncommon merchandise. “Hey, if an adventurer is wacked enough to try Self Found, that’s on them, but I have the weapons they’ll want to murder with efficiency. Why leave green upgrades to chance? I even have potions at affordable prices! Come find me. I promise, you’ll leave a satisfied customer.”

“Chance” as Merchant Lizzarik pointed out, is the way of looting. Aside from the numerous mobs wandering the world, there are also treasure chests to plunder. Having been lucky in finding green and occasional blue gear in the past, I never pass the opportunity to clear a camp of mobs in hopes something wonderful awaits within. Of course, this is a more dangerous proposition in Hardcore mode, where mistakes and miscalculations are not forgiven.

Speak Friend And Enter

The exception to Self Found’s solo play is grouping for dungeon runs. Dungeon quest rewards and boss loot offer powerful gear for those willing to take the ultimate risk. I have not ventured into a dungeon yet with my Hardcore characters, but there is time. World of Warcraft Classic Hardcore is a success and Self Found mode adds more thrills to players seeking greater challenge, and vendors seeking riches.
