While Godzilla fans eagerly await the next Monsterverse movie, a fan made short film will premiere at Godzilla Fest 2022 in Tokyo on November 3rd. Godzilla vs. Gigan Rex is a production of director Takuya Uenish, and sequel to his internationally acclaimed 2019 short film, G vs. G. The original minute long film was a winning entry in a contest by Japanese Youtube channel, GEMSTONE. Mr. Uenish received the opportunity to collaborate with Toho, the Japanese production company that released Godzilla upon the world in 1954. Godzilla vs. Gigan Rex is the result of the collaboration and one of the highlights of Godzilla Fest 2022, which celebrates the 50th anniversary of their first battle.

Gigan was introduced in Toho’s 1972 Godzilla vs. Gigan, and reappeared three decades later in 2004’s Godzilla: Final Wars. He remains one of Godzilla’s fiercest adversaries, matching Godzilla’s power and radioactive breath with massive claws, an armored body, chest-mounted saw, and laser vision. Gigan was usually under extraterrestrial control to conquer Earth. The next Monsterverse movie features Godzilla and Kong teaming up to confront, “a colossal undiscovered threat hidden within our world, challenging their very existence – and our own.” I wonder if an alien race is involved and if so, they brought Gigan with them.

The runtime for Godzilla vs. Gigan Rex has not been reviewed, but the trailer is half as long as G vs. G and indicates an epic battle, with Big G facing off with several Gigan (Yes, I’m making Gigan the singular and plural usage. Feel free to correct me). Hopefully, the film will be released to all Godzilla fans shortly afterward.
