Ever since I first watched The Making of Star Wars on TV I have loved movie concept art and Making Of… books. I spent so many hours reading and rereading The Art of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back that the binding eventually crumbled. This appreciation of concept artistry and seeing my characters through someone else’s eyes is why I wanted character art created for my novel, A Nightmare of Magic and Madness, even though the drawings do not appear in the book.
I found the artist, Margaret Ellison, on TikTok. It was the details in the black and white images she shared that made me think she could bring my characters to life. I provided descriptive passages from the book along with reference images, and she did all the rest. I am thrilled with the results. She captured the appearances and spirits of four people who have occupied my imagination for decades.
I hope you like them as well.
